Application process:
By choice and charter the number of student places is always limited because we will by design always be a small school. We have always had many more applicants then openings. The number of classes at each level has been variable during the growth phase of the school as we adjust to facility and other limitations. One year, for example, we could not open any kindergarten classes or first grades because we had to reserve the available space for our rising students. But in general, the best odds for successful admission will be for the early grades when new classes are opened.
Although we feel all students would benefit from attendance at the CRC-CS, unfortunately we can only serve a very few.
Applications for entrance at the start of a school year are taken in the preceding spring. The most important question is whether the student would be best served by entrance into this school. This requires parent/guardian participation. After the initial application deadline a lottery of applicants is performed to establish a priority ranking. Either before or after this lottery a professional reading assessment is made of each possible student to determine strengths and areas requiring special attention. This is not an entrance examination, but participation is a requirement for admission. We believe that it is important for both the parents/guardians and the school to come to a realistic appreciation of what can be accomplished at the school. This is as true for the most advanced and most struggling child.
There are three exceptions to the lottery requirement: 1) A sibling of a child already a student in the school gets an automatic top priority. 2) A child of an employee or board member of CRC also gets an automatic top priority. 3) A child applying to fill an opening during the school year is prioritized by first come first serve appropriate for the opening.
Applications are taken year around for possible intra-term entrance. A waiting list may be established for filling openings during the year based on the time of qualification of the student. Once an opening happens, the most important question is whether or not the possible student would be best served by entrance into the school at that time rather then at the beginning of a school year. We reserve the right to not fill openings if in our judgment this is the best course for the students already enrolled or for the applicant.
