OTL and Specials

Tutoring, Specials, Community Service, Special Programs

We have two blocks of time everyday that allow us to break the boundaries of regular classroom activity. During these times we offer OTL, Specials and PE.  What we call OTL (OTL refers to a special Opportunities To Learn.)  allows re-grouping into problem focused instruction independent of grade level. We offer both small group tutoring and small group advanced activities.  During Specials our students get special instruction often from experts who can only teach part-time in drama, art, music and Spanish.  Special activities such as community service school projects sometimes extend into this time.

The flexibility of this arrangement serves both the individual child who may be assigned different types and levels of instruction depending on his/her progress, and the school as a whole. For example, our reading comprehension program  (SQR3 Detectives) was first introduced school wide during this time as a trial prior to its eventual incorporation into regular classroom instruction

.

OTL:   Our small group tutoring is generally based on the successful tutoring program developed by the CRC prior to establishment of the school.  Specific training is provided to our certified teachers but wide latitude to try new techniques is given.  Small group activities have also included Reader's Theater, Boys Book Club and Literature Circles.

Specials:   This is time for group work rather then independent reading or computer use. Music, art and Spanish classes meet at this time.

Community Service Projects: We believe that helping others is important and children can benefit from being part of social service projects.  These are usually organized by classroom but can extend specials time.  Some of these projects are instituted by the PTO and most involve parents in some fashion.
